The Humming of My Soul

“O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (Psalm 96:1)

I’m a hummer. Not the over-sized, over-priced, gas-guzzling vehicle by the same name, but rather the musical kind. At home, I hum as I come down the staircase. In the car, I hum as I’m stopped at a red light. As I mow the lawn, I hum. I even hum as I’m toasting my Pop-Tart.

No song dominates my humming playlist. I’m more of a shuffler. Suddenly, “Hey, Jude!” comes drifting out. A little while later, it could be “I Surrender All.” I don’t discriminate between rock, sacred, movie theme sounds, Disney, and commercial jungles…but never rap!

Once in a while, I’ll create as I hum. Some melody will invade my senses, and it will flow out in a nonsensical way like a hyperactive cocker spaniel chasing rabbits around the backyard. There will be no rhyme or reason for the direction of the hum. It just is.

For me, humming is a sign of inner stillness and ease. I’ve noticed I go into a humming drought when I’m stressed or discouraged. I’ll often be humming on the drive home from Sunday morning worship. Our worship gathering is a meaningful hour, almost like a precursor to humming home. It’s like a warm-up for the twenty-minute drive through hurried traffic.

At times, my humming spans a few seconds, almost like a pause from life for a commercial, and at other times it covers an entire walk in the park. Interestingly enough, I really hum after reading my morning devotional, Paul David Tripp’s “New Morning Mercies”. I’m assuming that is because I’m pondering what I’ve just read, letting it filter into my soul like a cup of pour-over coffee.

When someone’s life situation keeps popping up in front of me, I can’t hum. Silence fills the moment as the problem dominates my thoughts. I pray and ponder, weep and wonder. The lamenting of my soul can not break free into a hum.

On the other hand, the joy my grandkids bring me often creates a concert of high-pitched humming that could easily be mistaken for a chuckle. The picture of my six-year-old grandson feasting on an ear of corn never fails to warm my soul.

Humming is a gift from God, and a gift to God. It’s like giving a gift to someone and being blessed by the reaction. I’ve been given the gift that strums my spirit, and I bless His holy name as a result.

Praise the Lord with words! Praise the Lord with song! Praise the Lord with a hum! Amen!
