Forgetting What My Next…
“I, even I, am he who blots out
your transgressions, for my own sake,
and remembers your sins no more.” (Isaiah 43:25)
“Remember these things, Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant. I have made you, you are my servant; Israel, I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 44:21)
I’m getting to that point where I will be thinking of something to say, but a pause or distraction for a few moments has the effect of causing me to lose what that the thought was. It’s not like I forget where I’m going when I get in the car, but rather trying to remember the reason for me to go to that destination. the back screen door of my mind finally flaps open and the reason comes strolling back in. It had just taken a brief break to get a fresh breath of air.
In our household, we have a monthly calendar that is a vital document. It contains all of our appointments, all the grandkids’ athletic contests and school concerts, all the due dates for some kind of submitted paperwork, and when we’re scheduled to head out of town for vacation, a wedding, or family reunions. We do not trust our memories anymore.
Once in a while, my forgetfulness saves me. That is, before I say something completely unintelligent I forget what the unintelligent point is that I was going to say. See…forgetfulness isn’t totally…something.
In my writing, I’ve resorted to putting a thought for a blog post in my iPhone notes before it passes into the atmosphere. The struggle is that I still can’t remember what the topic meant. For example, right now in my cell phone notes I have headings of “Foot Powder”, “As you get older, sentimental gets in the way!, “Paying for Accountability”, “Enjoy Jesus Christ Coca Cola Shirt”, “Cootie Catcher”, and “Imperfect Perfect: How We Have Lowered the Bar on What Perfection Is.” All of those topics came like a thunderstorm into my thoughts, but have exited faster than the Amazon delivery truck.
I take comfort in knowing that God sometimes forgets. His Word tells us that when He forgives our sins He remembers them no more. They are forgotten more than what it was I was supposed to pick up at the supermarket. The logical person says that since God is all knowing, He does not forget. the defining characteristic of our Lord, however, is that His grace helps guides the eraser over the marks of our transgressions.
The Word of God also tells us that He will not forget us. He forgives and forgets our failures, but He never forgets that we are persons of value whom He loves. He is consistent in His grace, steady in His love, and compassionate in his forgiving.
I’m blessed to know Him, and that…I will never forget.
