All Saints Prayer
I wrote this for this past Sunday’s All Saints Day worship. It’s a thank you to those who have navigated the day, walked with us, and followed along behind us keeping us on course.
Lord of all!
There are footprints all around us of those who have gone before us. We thank you for those who have walked beside us in problem-filled moments and the dizzying effect of life’s unsteadying steps. Sometimes we thought we were making our own progress, but then we realized that there were those who were holding us up in their prayers.
We thank you for those who stayed in front of us, displaying the garments of faith and perseverance, showing us how one can navigate through the storms, befriending the unfriendly, and choosing to believe that the narrow path avoided by doubting Thomases is the right path to follow.
And thank you for those who have come behind us, cleaning up our messes, justifying our errors in judgment, and whispering wisdom to us as we have swayed to the side.
Dear Lord, we’d be in a world of hurt if you hadn’t meshed the way of our journey with the saints who are either now in glory or even sitting close to us at this very moment.
Amen.
